Plastic extrusion process requirements for raw material melt index

2022-09-22

The melt index is a parameter that characterizes the flow rate of the raw material in the screw. It measures the fluidity of the polymer at a given shear force, which is related to the shear force and temperature.

The level of the melt finger affects the performance of the plastic. Plastic raw materials generally have high melt index, high fluidity, convenient injection molding and good stiffness and barrier properties; but impact resistance, environmental stress crack resistance, outdoor properties, and chemical resistance properties are poor; the smaller the melt index, the better the stiffness and barrier properties. Its breaking strength, hardness, toughness, anti-aging stability and other properties have been improved, and it is suitable for extrusion production process. The melting index of plastic raw materials in general extrusion production process is 6cm³/10min. If it is 6-10cm³/10min, it needs to be tested on the production line to confirm whether it can be extruded. If it is larger than 10cm³/10min, it must not be suitable for extrusion.
