Plastic extrusion is a high-volume manufacturing process that involves the homogeneous melting of thermoplastic materials. This molten material may be in granular, powdered or granular form. Under sufficient pressure, the molten material separates from the forming die holes. So, how does plastic extrusion work? It can be broken down into four main steps. Today we mainly talk about the first two steps.
Step 1: Add Additives
The plastic extrusion process starts with adding additives to the plastic material for use in the process. This is very different from CNC machining. According to production needs, additives can be colorants or UV inhibitors.
Step Two: Melting the Material
The next step in the plastic extrusion process is to feed the plastic material into the hopper. From the hopper, it moves through the feed port into the barrel. Through strict temperature regulation, the barrel is equivalent to a furnace.
In addition, the barrel facilitates the uniform dispersion of the plastic material used in the process through a huge rotating screw. Plastic materials are transformed from a solid to a molten state when heated and rotated.
